FAST - Fluor SKM Iron Ore Joint Venture, is a partnership between global business leaders; working with BHP Billiton Iron Ore on its multi-billion dollar growth plans in Western Australia. The FAST Programme is defining and leading the international natural resources market.
FAST oversees the construction of several expansion projects simultaneously and selected EPCM (engineering, procurement, construction and management) services for BHP Billiton Iron Ore.
BHP Billiton’s Iron Ore current growth plans are designed to take installed capacity of the Pilbara operations to 300 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) by 2015. They include:
- Expanding the existing Port Hedland harbour facilities and potentially establishing new outer harbour facilities.
- Dual tracking of sections of the rail system between Newman and Port Hedland and adding new spur lines.
- Developing new mining hubs and expanding mining capacity in the Pilbara.
All of the expansion plans are well-progressed and subject to a range of Government and internal approvals.
Rapid Growth Project 5 (RGP5) in now underway across the Pilbara. This project is designed to expand the capacity of BHP Billiton Iron Ore's operations by 50 million tonnes, to 205 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) it is the latest project in an on-going growth program which started in 2001.
The FAST workforce including EPCM and construction contractors for RGP5 is likely to peak at about 1,200 by mid 2010
